Clay Bratton, CFE — Founder of Cover Your Assets Consulting, LLC

Clayton Ross Bratton, CFE

Over a 15-year career at Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Fulton Bank, Clay advanced from frontline fraud investigator to AVP-level roles spanning Financial Crimes, Internal Control Testing, and Risk Management — leading complex fraud investigations across debit card, ACH, wire, and online banking channels, and designing enterprise-wide risk programs supporting federal consent orders and regulatory remediation.

He holds the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential and a double major Bachelor's degree in Business Administration & General Business from Limestone University (cum laude). He is also Lean Six Sigma certified — the same evidence-based discipline banks use to find and close control gaps. Clay applies it to your situation: pinpointing where you are exposed, weighing how likely each risk is, and fixing the ones that matter most. Not guesswork.

Clay founded Cover Your Assets Consulting, LLC out of a genuine passion for protecting everyday consumers from fraud and financial exploitation. That passion has a face. Early in his career, he had to tell a grandmother that the person she had trusted — someone who convinced her to hand over access to her computer — had wired $88,000 out of her accounts, and the bank had no recourse. No reversal. Gone. That moment never left him.

“Most people only think about fraud protection after something goes wrong — after the money is gone, after the account is compromised, after the damage is done. But by the time you're on hold with the fraud department, you've already lost. My mission is simple: get to my clients before the criminals do. Protection built before a loss occurs is worth a thousand phone calls made after one.”

How Fraud-Savvy Are You?

Think you know how to protect yourself? Take the quiz — click each question to reveal the answer choices, pick one, and see how you do.

1. You get an urgent call from someone claiming to be your bank saying your account has been compromised. What should you do? Unanswered
A Follow their instructions — they called you, so it must be real.
B Hang up immediately and call your bank using the number on the back of your card.
C Ask them security questions to verify their identity first, then cooperate.
D Give them only your account number, not your password.
Correct answer: B. Phone numbers can be spoofed — a caller appearing to be your bank is never proof they are your bank. Hang up and call back using a number you find yourself. Never give information or follow instructions from an inbound call you did not initiate.
2. Which of your accounts is most valuable to a fraudster who wants to take over everything else? Unanswered
A Your bank account
B Your social media profile
C Your primary email account
D Your phone number
Correct answer: C. Your primary email controls password resets for almost every other account you own — banking, social media, shopping, and more. Whoever controls your email can trigger "forgot password" on nearly everything else. Protect it first, protect it fiercely.
3. A text message says you've won a gift card. There's a link to claim it. What's the right move? Unanswered
A Click the link — if it looks professional, it's probably fine.
B Delete it without clicking. It's a scam.
C Forward it to a friend to verify first.
D Reply "STOP" to unsubscribe.
Correct answer: B. Unsolicited prize texts are a classic phishing tactic. Clicking the link can install malware or harvest your credentials. Replying — even to "opt out" — confirms to scammers that your number is active. Delete and move on.
4. What is the single most effective step you can take right now to protect your financial accounts? Unanswered
A Subscribe to a credit monitoring service
B Change all your passwords to something longer
C Freeze your credit at all three bureaus — it's free
D Enable two-factor authentication via text message
Correct answer: C. A credit freeze is free, reversible, and immediately blocks criminals from opening new accounts in your name — even if they have your Social Security number. Credit monitoring only alerts you after damage is done. A freeze stops it before it starts.
5. You sent money via Zelle to someone who turned out to be a scammer. What's the likely outcome? Unanswered
A Recovery is extremely difficult — Zelle payments are treated as authorized transfers.
B Your bank must refund you within 10 business days.
C File a dispute and the funds will be returned automatically.
D The FTC will recover it within 90 days.
Correct answer: A. Because you authorized the payment — even under false pretenses — banks historically treat these as valid transfers. Some banks now offer limited scam reimbursement, but it is far from guaranteed. Prevention is the only reliable strategy with peer-to-peer payment apps.
